Northwood’s Retreat in Rosemount

Description of original landscape

 This heavily wooded, one-acre lot had many mature oaks, aspens and overgrowing buckthorn. There was a large slope towards the house and limited access from one side of the lot. Existing bushes and mature linden trees grew at the front of the home. Major tree removal and pruning was necessary.

Owner’s vision and goals

The owners wanted a more functional back yard with a north woods feeling. They envisioned an entertainment area with a fire pit for family and friends gatherings. They also wanted the front of the home to have better curb appeal in this newer housing development. With the exception of the existing bushes and linden trees at the front of the property, everything else was fair game for new landscaping.

TriDesigns assessment

The owners were considering moving but TriDesigns suggested that they would probably not find another property with as much natural beauty on the market. After a lengthy search by the owners, that assessment was confirmed. The selection of materials for this project would be critical to insure the natural northern Minnesota look.

TriDesigns Solution

To develop an authentic natural north woods setting with year round color, TriDesigns choose mesabi red boulders from the northern shores of Minnesota for the retaining walls, paver walkway and patio areas. Not only did the rich color create a spectacular setting, it also tied in extremely well with the brick of the home. Major amounts of buckthorn were removed while keeping the aspen to keep in theme with the north woods. A gazebo/deck combination feature stairs to the patio pond. Waterfalls, streams and pathways meander throughout the property. Although rain created problems for completing the project, it was still finished on time and within budget. Three designers were selected to submit designs and bids for this project and TriDesigns won based on our unique design and materials selection.
