Creating a north woods retreat in Rosemount
Going “up north” is an activity many Minnesotans enjoy. There is something about the elegance, majesty and rustic beauty of the landscape that draws us back again and again. For some of us a cabin on a pristine lake or nestled in the pines and birch near a meandering stream is the ultimate summer weekend getaway. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could create that environment to enjoy year-round at your home? That challenge was presented to Tom Dahlmeir, owner of TriDesigns, Inc., by a homeowner in Rosemount.
The starting point
As with any new project, Dahlmeir spent time discussing with the owners what they wanted, possibilities considering the limitations of the lot and budget. In this case, the owners were looking to create a north woods feel and a more functional backyard. They envisioned an area where they could entertain family and friends, including a fire pit to gather around. In addition to the backyard, they wanted a redesign of the front yard for better curb appeal, and to distinguish it from other homes in their housing development.
The challenge
The character of the property presented some difficulties. It was a heavily wooded, one-acre lot with many mature oaks, aspens and overgrowing buckthorn. There was a large slope towards the house and limited access from one side of the lot, and major tree removal and pruning was necessary.
The solution
Selecting the right materials was critical to ensure the natural northern Minnesota look. To develop an authentic north woods setting with year-round color, TriDesigns chose mesabi red boulders from the northern shores of Minnesota for the retaining walls, paver walkway and patio areas. The rich color tied the landscaping in with the brick of the home. A combination gazebo/deck with stairs leads to the patio pond and fire pit entertainment area. Waterfalls, streams and pathways meander throughout the property. The final touches of bushes and flowers, along with the spectacular views from the home, complete the effect of a northern Minnesota retreat in this backyard in the city.
